About the Authors: Alex L. Combs and Andrew Eakett are a creative duo, longtime couple, and trans artists who’ve spent over two decades exploring the intersections of art, history, and gender. Their work draws from a deep well of feminist and trans theory, culminating in Trans History, a decade-long project born from their own coming out journeys. They live in the San Francisco Bay Area.
About the Book: What does “trans” mean—and how have trans people shaped the world throughout history?
In this vibrant and deeply researched graphic nonfiction, trans creators Alex L. Combs and Andrew Eakett trace the history of gender diversity from antiquity to today. With profiles of historical figures like the Roman emperor Elagabalus, conquistador Antonio de Erauso, and Stonewall icons Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera, Trans History debunks the myth that trans identity is a modern invention.
It also tackles colonial gender impositions, sexology, activism, backlash, and modern resistance—all interwoven with illustrated conversations with trans artists, scholars, and organizers. Moving, funny, and unflinchingly real, this book is both a celebration and an educational tool—filled with nuance, humanity, and hope.
